What is a huarache?

A huarache is a traditional handmade sandal originally crafted in Mexico. Known for its woven leather design, flexible sole, and lightweight feel, the huarache is built for comfort and everyday wear. Each pair is carefully woven by hand—no two pairs are exactly alike—making every huarache both functional and uniquely artistic.

A Quick History of Huaraches

Huaraches trace their origins back hundreds of years to Indigenous communities in Mexico, particularly in regions like Jalisco and Michoacán. The name comes from the Purépecha word kwarachi, meaning “sandal.”

Early huaraches were made from raw leather and woven fibers, designed to withstand long days of walking and work. Over time, artisans refined the weaving techniques, creating the iconic patterns huaraches are known for today.

By the mid-20th century, huaraches began gaining global popularity as a symbol of Mexican craftsmanship and cultural heritage. Despite modern variations, true huaraches remain rooted in tradition—handwoven by skilled artisans who pass down their craft through generations.
